Liu Bingjiang was born in Beijing, China in 1937. He graduated from the oil painting department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1961. He has since been a professor in the Fine Arts Department of the Central Nationalities Institute. He is also a member of the China Artists’ Society, China Artists’ Society Mural Art Committee, and a founding member of the Beijing Oil Painting Research Association.
For a time, Liu Bingjiang was separated from his wife, Zhou Ling, also a well-known heavy color artist, went she was sent to Yunnan for 8 years. She was originally looked after by Ting Shao Kuang, who was a former classmate and friend of Liu Bingjiang.
Between 1980 and 1982, Liu Bingjiang and his wife, Zhou Ling, partnered together to produced a mural for the Beijing Hotel entitled “Creation, Harvest, Joy.” The well-known mural measures 20’ x 55’ and illustrates over 20 Chinese minorities.
From 1985 to 1987, Liu Bingjiang toured Europe while living and working as a guest artist at the invitation of the French government. He was awarded the silver medal in the 1986 French Salon, Paris, and was given the French National Gold Medal for Painting the same year.
